These sermons were given at Bowdoin College's commencement. While embracing science and progress Chamberlain held firm to
his Christian beliefs and was sure that both science and religion were needed to understand the world fully.
While urging students to follow their conscience, he admits that "conscience has even braced men in the wrong."
remembering how both the North and the South used religion to justify that they were in the right he points out,
"we are bound not only to obey its pointing, but see that it points right."
