A Diary of Battle

Page 424 Wainwright describes the positions of the 5th Corps before Petersburg. Wainwright sees Cutler's men of the 4th Division come running back in disorder. This coincides with DeLacy's account where he describes the troops to their left breaking back. In his official report Wainwright would describe Bigelow and Heart behind Chamberlain's brigade, in this account he only mentions that they are to the right of and behind Cultler, Cutler was on Chamberlain's left.

Page 507 - 508 describes the battle of Quaker Road saying, "Chamberlain told me that he would have been gone had not the battery got in when it did." He also vividly describes Mitchell being wounded after placing his guns in support of Chamberlain.

Page 514 At the Battle of Five Forks Wainwright recalls Sheridan pooh-poohing when learning Crawford would be next in command, instead Sheridan would place Griffin in command.
