50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg

In 1913 Chamberlain (number 9) was appointed a member of the commission to plan the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, he was so ill that he brought along Dr. Shaw (number 45). Though the doctor had been the regimental surgeon of the 20th Maine, he had not been at the battle of Gettysburg, but Chamberlain asked that the Doctor be allowed to travel with him fearing he could not make the trip without him. In this photo and the photo after page 36, Doctor Shaw is seen keeping a watchful eye on his old commander. After spending much of his time and energy planning the Anniversary celebration, Chamberlain would prove too sick to attend. Both Chamberlain and the Doctor celebrated the anniversary at home in Maine, a few months later Doctor Shaw would be by Chamberlain's side when he passed away on February 24, 1914.
