Grant Visits Maine
Bowdoin College's Commencement was always a big affair. Parties where celebrated throughout the town and
many came to hear the professors and students give speeches.
At the Commencement ten years before Chamberlain gave a lecture on Law and Liberty that was so well
received he was immediately invited to teach at the College. See Commencement 1855.
This commencement happily coincided with a visit to Maine by General Grant.
Both Chamberlain and the one armed General Howard extended invitations for Grant to attend.
