Grant Visits Maine

Bowdoin College's Commencement was always a big affair. Parties where celebrated throughout the town and many came to hear the professors and students give speeches. At the Commencement ten years before Chamberlain gave a lecture on Law and Liberty that was so well received he was immediately invited to teach at the College. See Commencement 1855.
This commencement happily coincided with a visit to Maine by General Grant. Both Chamberlain and the one armed General Howard extended invitations for Grant to attend.

For another account of Grant's visit see Bowdoin Homecoming Also see History of Bowdoin 1927 for an account of the few words Grant spoke while in Brunswick.
