Unveiling Ceremonies Equestrian Statue of Major General John F. Reynolds
Saturday July 1 1899, Gettysburg

It seems strange that Chamberlain would be asked to give a speech at this monument. Perhaps he really did not expect to be called upon. It is likely that he would have some interest in that area of the field because five out of the six the regiments he would lead at Petersburg all had monuments there. The 121 PA, 142 PA, 143 PA, 149 PA and the 150th PA.
It is interesting that when trying to insist he wasn't really anyone special, just a colonel among others, General Sickles speaks up saying "Ah but without such colonels as you, what would have become of us?"
